Step 1: Create New Document

Is time to start, so we need to create a new document File > New (Ctrl+N) with 1280 width and 960 height, color mode RGB, 8 bit.

Step 2: Place stock image

Now we need to open the stock image in our case “Home_of_the_forest__s_spirit.jpg” and place it in our document created at first step.

Step 3: Edit Curves

Go to Image > Adjustments > Curves (Ctrl+M) and edit the curves how you see in the screenshot from below.

Step 4: Create first fill layer

Is time to create our first fill layer for our photo effect. Go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color. Set the Mode to Exclusion and Opacity to 77% than hit OK.

In the next pop-up set the color to #322e56.

Step 5: Create second fill layer

After our first fill layer was created is time for the second, so go again to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color but this time set the Mode to Overlay, the Opacity to 77% and the color to #173a36. In the layer menu set the fill color to 25%.

Step 6: Create third fill layer

As in the previews steps go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color set the Mode to Multiply, Opacity to 25%, Color to #ffcc00 and in the layer menu fill color to 75%.

Step 7: Edit the curves

In the Adjustments Panel click on “Create a new Curves adjustment layer” and edit the curves as you see below.

Step 8: Edit Hue and Saturation

As in the anterior step go to the Adjustments Panel and click on the “Create a new Hue/Saturation adjustment layer” and set the Saturation to -25. The Melancholy Photo Effect is now complete.

  2. Hi friend – really appreciate you making the time to share this – it is forever greater to see an individual in reality do it instead than just reading it!
